ISO 9001:2008 vs ISO 9001:2015

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) normally reviews standards every 5 years to ensure they remain relevant to changing market requirements. ISO 9001:2015 is now published and available.

WHAT IS THE TRANSITION PERIOD?

23 September 2015 – ISO 9001:2015 standard developed

September 2016 – New certificates referencing ISO 9001:2008 could still be issued until September 2016

After September 2018, the old ISO 9001:2008 edition was withdrawn

September 2018 – Deadline for conformity with the new ISO 9001:2015 standard

The main changes of the new ISO 9001:2015 standard are summarised as follows:

  • Greater focus on the customer
  • Policies and objectives aligned to the organisation’s strategies
  • Risk-based thinking

Greater flexibility regarding documentation

What benefits does the new version bring?

The new version of the standard brings users the following benefits:

• Emphasises greater management commitment

• Helps address organisational risks and opportunities in a structured way

• Uses simplified language and common structure/terms, which are particularly useful for organisations using multiple management systems, such as those for environment, health and safety, or business continuity

• Emphasises more effective supply chain management

• Easier to use for service organisations and knowledge-based organisations.
